COLUMBIA PRESBYTERIAN–INSPIRE: THE LATEST PEDIATRIC EDUCATION TRAINING SHARED VIRTUALLY GLOBALLY

Sponsored by R Baby since its inception as POISE, this collaborative medical education research network develops and shares novel educational training modules, webinars and other resources that result in measurable improvements in the health outcomes of acutely ill infants and children.

While the advent of COVID-19 has resulted in uncertainty for many organizations, INSPIRE has continued to grow and thrive even under these adverse conditions. INSPIRE reached 492 sites in 46 countries!

Last April, INSPIRE held its first-ever virtual meeting, which by all accounts succeeded in ways that were not envisioned. A diverse community of simulation practitioners gathered from around the world, focusing on both new research and strategies that had evolved to address the then-new pandemic. This was followed in October by a second virtual gathering at International Pediatric Simulation Society  (IPSS) during which special attention was given to issues of diversity and equity in simulation. These meetings were the best attended of any INSPIRE gathering to date, with almost 200 attendees at the October event.

In addition to these activities, the past 12 months have seen INSPIRE continue to offer its successful award offerings, and to assist researchers develop high-impact multi-site studies via the ALERT process. INSPIRE partnered with IPSS, the Netzwerk Kindersimulation, and PediSTARS to present a summit on distance simulation, initiated a process to develop simulation based extensions to the SQUIRE guidelines, and embarked on a review study examining the degree to which ALERT participation impacts future academic success. It has continued to invest in the IPSS-INSPIRE fellowship, which supports rising stars in the field from around the world and provides educational and scholarly support as they strive to effect global change in pediatric care using simulation.

On August 21, 2020 INSPIRE, along with IPSS, PediSTARS and NetworkKinderSimulation, supported a one-day virtual conference: Healthcare Distance Simulation Summit.

Over 200 individuals participated in the event, working through online consensus exercises, to discuss the current nomenclature and framework of distance simulation and describe the research landscape of distance simulation research. This conference connected the global pediatric simulation community allowing for expansion and exploration of distance simulation-based research questions.

Additional INSPIRE projects and initiatives include:

  • SQUIRE – INSPIRE has assembled a group of diverse experts in quality improvement to conduct a modified Delphi process with the goal of creating simulation specific extensions for the SQUIRE guidelines.
  • 10 Year Alerts – INSPIRE is conducting an investigation of all past ALERT projects to determine the impact of the process on research productivity.
  • Distance Simulation – INSPIRE is partnering with IPSS, PediSTARS and the Netzwerk Kindersimulation to develop the nomenclature of distance simulation as well as a bold research agenda.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – INSPIRE has recently launched a new initiative to develop a program of scholarship to address issues of diversity and equity in simulation training.
